Correspondence to Alma Mahler, 1903-1955.

The correspondence through 1927 reflects the various stages in Pfitzner's career and touches on topics such as his composing (including that of Palestrina), performances of his work, and his conducting (including that of Mahler's second symphony and Das Lied von der Erde). There are mentions of his relationship to Mahler's music and of his personal interactions with Bruno Walter. His letters also document his esteem of Alma's responses to his work. In one instance Pfitzner imparts his responses to Franz Werfel's plays Juarez und Maximilian and Paulus unter den Juden. Montenuovo's letter is a response to a letter Alma wrote in support of Pfitzner. Most of the remaining letters from Pfitzner stem from the period following World War II; topics at that time include his experiences during the war; his desire to work in Vienna; his gift to Alma of a manuscript of a work dedicated to her (opus 13); and his anticipation of the Vienna premiere of Palestrina. Alma's letter to Leer expresses her confidence in Pfitzner's rejection of Nazi ideology. The letters from Mali Pfitzner include an account of Hans's last few months of life and of his illness. Also included are the announcement of Pfitzner's funeral; 2 postcards bearing images of Pfitzner (1 of a death mask); and 3 clippings about him (1 of which is an essay by Rutz from a Viennese newspaper).
